An autumn walk around a deserted Port Isaac, Cornwall

Port Isaac changes noticeably once autumn arrives. The village becomes much quieter after the busy summer months, making it a good time to see the harbour and narrow streets without the usual crowds. We like visiting at this time of year because it gives a clear sense of what Port Isaac is like outside the peak holiday season and allows you to move around the village at a more relaxed pace.

We had barely arrived before bumping into fellow Cornwall content creators ‘Cornish Walking Trails‘ who were just finishing one of their walks. It is always good to see others documenting Cornwall and it was a nice surprise to meet them on such a calm afternoon.

The video at the top of the page shows a simple short walk around the village. Without the summer activity you can appreciate the layout of the village more easily, from the old fishermen’s cottages to the familiar locations that appear throughout the long running series Doc Martin which has made Port Isaac recognisable to viewers around the world.

When we reached the shoreline the tide was out and the harbour was completely empty, giving a clear view of the slipway and the surrounding walls. The absence of boats made the space feel even quieter than usual and added to the calm that autumn brings to this part of the north coast.

Port Isaac is also home to one of Cornwall’s most celebrated restaurants – ‘Outlaw’s Fish Kitchen’ run by chef Nathan Outlaw. We will be visiting it next time we are in the village and will share that experience in a future video and blog.

Port Isaac is always worth visiting but autumn offers a useful look at the village in its natural day to day state. This short video captures that quieter atmosphere and shows why we often return at this time of year to film and explore this well known corner of Cornwall.
