This short video was shot in early May 2023 at St Clether, near Launceston, Cornwall.
We were staying at the Ekopod Glamping site when I first caught a whiff of a very musty smell (and no, it wasn’t my hiking socks). I immediately knew there were deer nearby.
From the top of the track where our pod was located, I spotted a large herd in a field about half a mile away. The deer appeared to be managed, as some were tagged and fencing was visible, but there seemed to be plenty of space for them to roam, graze, and play freely.
I also got quite close to two adult deer drinking in a stream near our accommodation, so they weren’t entirely confined.
Although it rained for much of our stay, I managed to grab my gear during a break in the weather and capture a few minutes of footage.
I’ve seen deer many times across Cornwall. One early morning near Lamorna, an adult and juvenile suddenly leapt out in front of my car on a narrow country lane. Moments like that really bring home just how large and impressive these animals are.
