Porthleven is one of the most popular places in Cornwall to watch the power of the Atlantic, especially during stormy weather. The village’s location on the southwest coast makes it particularly exposed to waves rolling in from the open ocean, and when high tide coincides with a storm, the results can be spectacular.
Porthleven’s harbour dates back to the early nineteenth century, built originally as a refuge for ships seeking shelter from the Atlantic. Over the years, it has become a well-known spot for storm watchers and photographers hoping to capture the full force of the ocean. The clock tower, perched on the end of the pier, has become an iconic symbol of the town and is often photographed with waves crashing around it during bad weather.
Despite the conditions, the atmosphere in Porthleven during a storm is always quite special. Locals gather safely behind barriers and along higher ground to watch the waves, while visitors are often amazed at how quickly the sea can change from calm to chaotic.
