I have been spending a lot of time filming rock pools recently, and it is fascinating to see the mini ecosystems that exist in each one. Every pool feels different, with its own small community of creatures adapting to the shifting tides and changing light.
At low tide, Marazion is full of excellent rock pools, each teeming with marine life. When the sun catches the water just right, the clarity is truly remarkable. The colours of the seaweed, shells, and sand come alive beneath the surface, creating a calm and almost hypnotic view.
Filming in these conditions is not easy with my current gear, but if these videos prove popular, it will be a good excuse to upgrade and get even closer to the action. In this video, you can spot shore crabs, prawns, hermit crabs, periwinkles, and more. I also glimpsed some baby eels and a few fast moving, unidentified fish that were too quick to capture on film.
It is always rewarding to see just how much life thrives in these small pockets of the coast. Rock pooling around Marazion is a great reminder that even in the shallowest water, Cornwall’s marine world is full of surprises.
