Humpback Whales & Dolphins, St Ives & Lands End, Cornwall, UK

Recently, I have spent a few hours tracking the humpback whales and dolphins that have been frequenting West Cornwall, attracted by the abundance of fish in the area. St Ives Bay has been a particular hotspot, but for a change of scenery, I also headed to Land’s End. After a couple of hours of waiting there, a humpback whale appeared in the distance, surfacing several times before disappearing back beneath the waves.

This video combines footage captured over a few days in early February 2023. Many of the shots were taken from at least a mile away on windy days, so I used software to stabilise the footage and bring the action a little closer while keeping the natural perspective intact.

It is always a privilege to see large marine life off Cornwall’s coast. The combination of whales and dolphins feeding in the same waters is something that still feels extraordinary, no matter how many times it happens. Filming moments like this takes patience, but when it all comes together, it offers a rare glimpse into the wild, living energy of the Atlantic.
