During this period, St Ives Bay has seen heightened activity from dolphins and whales, drawn by the abundant mackerel and other fish in the area. On many days, the surface of the water has been alive with movement, and you can often spot fins breaking through the waves even from the shoreline.
These clips were filmed over a couple of hours on a very cold and windy day in February 2023, capturing the dolphins’ energetic displays as they hunted and played in the bay. At times, several individuals breached together, leaping and twisting in the air before disappearing beneath the surface again.
The energy and movement were incredible to watch, with the dolphins covering large areas of the bay as they chased the fish. It was one of those occasions where the sea seemed full of life, and even through the cold wind, it was impossible not to stop and watch. Moments like this are a real highlight of filming in Cornwall, a reminder of how rich and active these coastal waters can be.
