Every year, Santa Claus Arrives in St Ives by lifeboat

(Update) This year the event will take place on 5th December 2025, 5.30pm.

The festive season in St Ives gets off to a memorable start when Santa Claus makes his arrival by lifeboat, straight into the harbour. It’s a moment that draws families, locals and visitors alike to gather around the water’s edge, awaiting his arrival and the start of the town’s Christmas celebrations.

I filmed the event in 2024, and the video (embedded at the top of this blog) captures the magic perfectly: the glow of the harbour lights, the waves gently lapping the quay, and that moment when the lifeboat glides in with Santa aboard.

What Happens On The Evening

Typically held in early December, the event begins on the West Pier of St Ives Harbour, where the crew of the local lifeboat launch vessel brings Santa ashore amid the harbour lights and festive anticipation. Once safely docked, Santa proceeds via his sleigh (or a suitably festive setup) through the town to the main square for the official Christmas light-switch on. Many in the crowd find vantage spots along Wharf Road, Fore Street and in the Royal Square area to witness the procession and the final countdown.
The event also builds community spirit: the harbour is busy with local residents, visitors and children, choirs often perform seasonal songs, and the atmosphere is full of expectation and joy.

Why This Event is Special

St Ives has a longstanding maritime heritage, and the arrival of Santa via lifeboat makes full use of the harbour setting. The local lifeboat station is a symbol of the town’s connection to the sea, and when Santa arrives by boat rather than by more conventional means, it reflects both the seaside character of St Ives and the festive twist locals and visitors love.
The event also reserves prime viewing along the harbourfront, transforming a working port into a stage for celebration, whilst reminding us of the scale and significance of the sea in Cornwall’s towns.

Tips for Visitors

  • Arrive early to secure a good viewing position along the West Pier, harbourfront or Royal Square.
  • Dress warmly, December evenings in St Ives are crisp, especially by the sea.
  • If taking children, keep safe by staying behind railings and avoiding the very edge of the harbour slipways.
  • After Santa’s arrival and the light-switch on, explore the town’s festive displays, late street shopping or warm up in a local café.

After the Lifeboat Arrival

Once Santa has landed and the lights come on, the town often continues with community events, local music, seasonal treats and a feel-good atmosphere that carries through December. It’s an ideal opportunity to combine your visit with an evening walk, some festive shopping and a meal overlooking the harbour.

Final Thoughts

The arrival of Santa by lifeboat is one of those moments when St Ives shows off its coastal charm and community spirit in equal measure. If you’re looking for a festive outing that combines seaside character, family-friendly fun and local tradition, this event delivers. Whether you’re capturing the scene on video, enjoying the lights or simply sipping something hot by the harbour, St Ives offers a Christmas start that’s both charming and very Cornish.
