Pednolva Walk in St Ives is one of the best spots to watch the sea in full force during high tides and stormy conditions. The walkway sits close to the harbour, offering a great view of the Atlantic waves as they surge in and crash against the stone walls.
On this particular day the wind was steady and the sea unsettled. I set up near St Ives Lighthouse to capture some close-up shots of the waves crashing against the walls, then spent the rest of the time filming from the lifeboat station until dusk. The tide was high, and each set of waves seemed to rise a little taller than the last.
Cornwall’s stormy seas always make for dramatic footage, and it’s hard not to enjoy seeing the occasional passerby get a sudden soaking. The spray reaches high above the walkway, catching the light as it drifts across the bay. The sound of the sea carries all around the harbour. deep, constant, and strangely soothing.
By the time evening arrived, the light had faded to a soft grey-blue, and the sea showed no sign of calming. Even on days like this, when the weather is far from settled, St Ives has a quiet beauty that draws you in. Watching the waves from Pednolva Walk is a simple reminder of how closely life here is tied to the sea.
