Storm Mathis Hits Porthleven, Cornwall, UK

After a short break from social media, I headed out to Porthleven to film the impact of Storm Mathis. The surf report promised some sizeable waves, and while they weren’t the biggest I’ve seen, the conditions still made for an exciting few hours of filming.

The sea was restless, pushing powerful waves into the harbour and sending spray high above the sea walls. Along the pier, the wind carried bursts of saltwater through the air, coating everything in a fine mist. The sound of each wave breaking against the granite was deep and constant, echoing through the harbour as people gathered to watch.

Even when the conditions aren’t extreme, Porthleven always delivers when it comes to storm watching. The shape of the harbour and its exposed position make it one of the best places in Cornwall to experience the power of the Atlantic. As the light faded, the sky turned a pale grey-blue, and the waves continued to roll in, keeping up their steady rhythm long after filming finished.

The footage captures the waves breaking along the harbour and the lively energy of the Cornish coast during the storm. Moments like this show why Porthleven remains a favourite spot for photographers, filmmakers, and anyone who loves seeing the sea in motion.
