Sleeping Seal (Close Up), Bottling Seal, Cornwall, UK

Have you ever wondered how seals sleep? Unlike humans, who tend to sleep continuously, seals prefer to take short naps while floating at sea. This behaviour is known as bottling, named after the way their bodies float vertically in the water with just their noses above the surface so they can breathe easily while resting.

This particular seal must have been especially tired, as it stayed in the same spot for about ten minutes. Watching it gently rise and fall with the motion of the waves was both peaceful and fascinating. It is easy to see why people find seals so endearing, as they seem completely content drifting quietly in the open water.

Moments like this offer a small glimpse into their daily life in the wild, showing how well adapted they are to their surroundings. Even while resting, they remain perfectly at home in the sea, a true part of Cornwall’s coastal landscape.
